DEMOCRACY AND JOURNALISM
To understand about the role played by journalism in democracy, we must first understand what is democracy.
So, what is democracy? Democracy can best be understood as a system of government in which all people of a country decide the major undertakings like laws, policies, leadership, and many other factors collectively.
So, what about Journalism? Journalism came into existence in about, the year 1780 with the introduction of newspaper to people namely Bengal Gazette and since then it has matured up to great extent and took many big leaps. Since then, it has been playing a very crucial role in almost every fields.
But what about the role of Journalism in democracy? To start with Media had played a very crucial role in shaping a healthy democracy of our country, and has made us aware about various social, economical as well as with political happenings around the world.
It played it selves like a mirror, which showed us the bitter and bare truth of life.
Politically, media has also played a major role, as with the presence of media, politicians are able to reach large crowd informing them about the key issues which are being faced by the citizens ranging from topics like government policies to common topics like crimes, water, religious freedom etc.
On the other side of the aspect, media also undoubtedly has reminded politicians about their unfulfilled promises at the time of election, and helped many illiterates, in electing the right person to the power.
This reminder forces the politicians to fulfil their promises in order for them to remain in power, and this coverage has significant achievement in educating rural illiterate masses in making them aware of all the events in their mothertongue.
