HISTORY OF JOURNALISM IN INDIA
The history of journalism in India begins from newspaper. As we see in today's time the number of pages in newspaper becomes 14 to 40 depending the content of news, fonts size, language and so on. But in the first newspaper of India the number of pages is only 4.
The first newspaper in India was Bengal Gazette (later called Hickey's Gazette) which was published in the year of 1780. This newspaper was published by James August Hickey. It was initialized as weekly political and commercial newspaper.
That was the time of British ruling. While this British rule, there is social and political corruption everywhere across country. So, to target this corruption and British affairs, Hickey published this newspaper. But in the year of 1781, Hickey was arrested and jailed for the criticization of British Government as well as East India Company.
From all above studies we say that the history of journalism in India began with Hickey and his publications.
After the Bengal Gazette, many newspaper prints across the country which obeyed the rule of government which were imposed on it. One of them was "Madras Courier" which was published for printing the government notifications and other was "Bombay Herald" (later merged with "Bombay Courier")
There is more than 2000 years in which Indian press has great evolved across globally. India start the journey of journalism with one newspaper but now India turned into more than 100,000 publications, which holding India into second largest market for newspaper in the world selling over 100 millions copies per day.
